Surcharge

Wick drains combined with surcharge is a commonly used technique to improve water- saturated soils that contain high levels of clay or silt. The process involves installing wick drains in the ground and then applying a surcharge. The downward pressure exerted by the surcharge compels the pore water in the soil to find the path of least resistance to escape, which is through the wick drains. This method can significantly reduce the construction time of a project, as the time required to reach settlement is reduced from years to just months, and it helps to prevent post-construction differential settlements. To further reduce the consolidation period, a temporary preload can be applied on top of the embankment or fill.

Vertical Wick Drains are the most economical ground improvement solution for soft soils with a high clay/silt content. CeTeau USA both manufactures and installs wick drains across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
